Neiman Marcus Group

Lithuania → USA

Retail, Logistics & E-Commerce

Summary

Neiman Marcus was founded in 1907 in Dallas by Herbert Marcus Sr., his sister Carrie Marcus Neiman, and her husband Al Neiman. Herbert and Carrie were children of Jacob Marcus, a Lithuanian-Jewish immigrant who had arrived in the United States in the 1870s. The Dallas store opened with $25,000 in capital and a deliberate decision to offer ready-to-wear women’s clothing — a novel category at the time. Stanley Marcus, Herbert’s son, expanded the chain after the Second World War. Neiman Marcus became the defining American luxury department store, was acquired by Hudson’s Bay Company in 2024, and operates as the Neiman Marcus division of Saks Global.

European Contribution

Lithuanian-Jewish immigrant commercial discipline and the merchant tradition of the late-19th-century Atlantic crossing.

American Impact
